2008 Two Handed Round North Island Race

The 2008 SSANZ Two Handed Round North Island Race is almost upon us. Starting on 23rd of February just off Devonport Wharf for the leg to Mangonui.

This year's race see's 24 entries, which is a record for the race while organized by SSANZ. It's great to see such a wide mix of boats in the fleet and the promise of lots of close battles and tough competition.

The Farewell Function will be at Devonport Yacht Club on Thursday 21st of February from 1930hrs.

The briefing at RNZYS on Friday 22nd February will feature a helicopter rescue and liferaft demonstration. The briefing will start at 1100hrs and we expect the "rescues" to take place starting between 1200 and 1230hrs. SSANZ welcomes all members who would like to come and look.

The start will be at 1400hrs on the 23rd off Devonport Wharf so if you get the chance either come down to the wharf, find a good viewing spot on North Head or get out on the water to wish the competitors well with a friendly wave as they set off on a great adventure.

Leg 2 will take the fleet to Wellington after a trip "around the top" of the island and then down the wild west coast. Next Leg 3 takes on the Waiarapa coast on the way to Napier. By this stage there will be some weary crews. Napier is always an enjoyable stopover but it is very easy to over indulge during wine tours to the excellent local vineyards.

Finally Leg 4 takes everyone back to Auckland. East Cape normally throws in a final good test of crew and yacht .

During the race SSANZ will be posting position reports asap after each radio sched. So keep checking for updates. Hopefully competitors will also provide reports (email or phone 0212267662) which will also be put on the website.

SSANZ would like to thank all the competitors for taking on the challenge and wish them the best of luck for what will be a fantastic race.
