Montego Bay III provisional winners of Leg 1 2014 RNI
09 Feb 2014
Montego Bay III is the provisional overall race leader on PHRF. Sailed by Simon McVeagh and Matt Stevens, Montego Bay III is a Simpson 13m.
Simon managed to twist his parents arm to borrow the family boat to compete in the race but not before they negotiated a charter fee of a new mainsail. They are campaigning on a shoestring and have put a lot of effort in just to ensure they can do the race.
Simon's crew Matt has sailing experience beyond his years. He has been part of Will Tiller's FMJ matchrace team and Youth America's Cup team.
Montego Bay III was right at the front of the start line and was still in the front row around North Head... ahead of many much more fancied boats. They obviously sailed a great leg and their handicap win is well deserved.
They may well have been flying under the radar but now I'm sure the other boats will be paying more attention.
