SIMRAD 50 Report

08 Jul 2006

Finally the 2006 SSANZ SIMRAD Two Handed Triple is underway... The first race, the SIMRAD 50 kicked off at 9:00. Conditions at the start were somewhat lighter than what was forecast, this tempted some crews into using the "BIG GEAR". However the mild conditions were not to be and the breeze came in with a vengence catching more than just a few boats out. Gusts of over 30 knots were a common occurance.

On the casualty list are the multi's Silver Raider and Sublime, who both turned turtle. Riverwind displayed their technique of roller furling spinnakers (wrapping tightly around the forestay) Although this got the kite under control it did prevent them using their headsail and forced an early retirement. Christie's mast decided it had had enough and Azure lost their near new spinnaker to a passing whale ??? (now we have heard it all)  There are also unsubstantiated claims a certain white (with a red graphic) 50 footer managed to bump the bottom at Passage Rock despite the fact it wasn't even a mark of their course. There were numerous retirements but also lots of battlers who made it to the finish.

X Factor, Wingz, Hanse off and Rattle and Rum were the quickest boats around their respective courses. However in the Shorthaul Division the Young 88 Outrageous would have had the quickest elapsed time to Passage Rock.
