Good forecast for RNI start
16 Feb 2011
Conditions are looking ideal for the start of the SSANZ Round the North Island two-handed yacht race in Auckland on Saturday (February 19), with southeasterly winds forecast to send the 40-boat fleet on its way to Mangonui in Northland.
The wet and windy weather Auckland is experiencing today is expected to pass through, as a ridge of high pressure moves up from the South Island. Southeast winds are expected to moderate to around 15 knots in the outer Hauraki Gulf and Northland coast as the boats head north to their first stopover.
Competitors will receive a detailed forecast from weatherman Bob McDavitt at the race briefing on Friday, but the Metservice currently predicts a 15 knot southeasterly dropping away during Saturday, and light winds on Sunday.
